2021 Maxwell Vineyard Semillon

At almost three years on release, the colour is starting to head to straw but still with lovely green tints. The aromas show lifted cut hay and citrus rind characters. Some vanillin and nougat evident on the palate, along with background lemon grass. A fuller style with a long palate carried by natural acidity.

Winemaker Comments
A complete turnaround from the last four dry years in the Hunter, with a firm La Nina cycle making for a wet season. Pokolbin had reached its annual rainfall by the end of October, and we ended up receiving 1030mm for 2020. It is difficult to recall a year where we have been closer to the edge of disaster in the Hunter Valley, with the prospect of not picking either whites or reds becoming a real
possibility with a few more wet days in late December. Thankfully, the sun came out, and we were able to pick all of our Semillon in pristine condition. Needless to say, all of our Semillon was in the winery in great condition by the end of January.
The Maxwell Vineyard is located at the southern end of Pokolbin and abuts the Brokenback range. The current vineyard was planted in the early 70’s by Don Maxwell and has supplied great Semillon to Brokenwood for a number of years.
Food Pairing
Pairs well with pork and richer Asian dishes.
Production
Harvesting all by hand. The fruit was crushed, chilled and pressed immediately. Bottled in July, neutral yeasts were used for the
fermentation, with no oak and no malolactic ferment, only stainless steel.
Drink
Drinking well now and will evolve further over the medium term.
